Fawcetts back in win column at Senior Nats
BY PAT HEALEY
ST JOHN’S, NL - The Hunter’s Ale House Fawcetts are back in the win column here at the Labatt Canadian senior men’s fast pitch championship Tuesday with a 6-5, nine inning victory over Newfoundland and Labrador no. two, Grumpy Stump.
Jason Blanchard hit a hard single to left field that scored Mark Arsenault from third base with the game’s winning run in the bottom of the ninth. Arsenault started at second base because of the International tie-breaking rule that calls for the last out to be placed at second.
In the top half of the inning, Grumpy Stump thought they had scored the go-ahead run, however an interference call was made on Shane Gamberg, and the runner Sean Cleary was also ruled out at home as a result.
P.E.I. started the game strong jumping out to a 1-0 lead before Grumpy Stump got going thanks to the big bat of Joe Fagan. Fagan hit solo and two run shots to give NL 2 a 3-2 lead after the top of the fourth.
Trailing 4-2 in the sixth, Arsenault and Kelly Wenstrom (2-4) each singled. Jamie MacDonald grounded out to advance the runners up a base, setting the stage for Chris Craig’s heroics. Craig (1-4) came to bat with two out and sent a shot to left field scoring Wenstrom and pinch runner Cory McKeigan, tying the game at 4-4.
It would stay that way until the extra innings.
Keith Coady singled home Cleary from second in the eighth for a short lived 5-4 lead. The Fawcetts countered when Jeff Ellsworth (0-3, walk, two runs scored) came across after two wild pitches to tie the game up yet again.
That set the stage for the ninth inning heroics by Blanchard (1-4(.
Grant Patterson earned the win in relief of starter Mike Bishop. Robbie Greene took the loss.
