The Vancouver Grey Sox opened the 2009 season with mixed results, finishing 2nd at the Rose Cup in Portland, Oregon June 20-21. The Grey Sox were without P Nick Underhill, P/1B Derek Mayson, and IF/OF Rob Giesbrecht who were all with the Canadian National Team on tour in Ontario. The Grey Sox played 5 games, withTravis Price and Ryan Brand handling all of the pitching, and finished with a 3-2 record. Midwest Stampede beat the Grey Sox decisively in the final and also bested the Sox in the preliminary round, breaking open a tight game with 6 runs in the top of the 7th to win going away. The Grey Sox won their other 3 games. The brightest spot for the Grey Sox was the pitching of Travis Price, who went 2-0 on the weekend and pitched 17 innings including 5 against the Stampede on Saturday, with an ERA of 1.23.
