Swashbucklers win NSA World Series

August 8, 2011

Salisbury, MD

The 2010 ASA National Champion Sedutto's Swashbucklers went 5-0 over the weekend to capture the 2011 NSA World Series. The Swashbucklers went 2-0 in pool play, defeating the Virginia Merchants 5-3 and the Northeast Sportsman 7-0, to qualify for the double elimination gold bracket. Jerlyn Rutt picked up the win in the opener striking out 14 and giving up only 2 hits. Kris Bogach, Mike Conigliaro and Mike Bourbakis all had 2 hits and combined for the 5 RBI's. In the second game, Duane Weiler threw a 4 hitter and Robert Santiago and Mike Bourbakis each had 3 hits to lead the Swashbucklers to the mercy rule win.

In their first gold bracket game, the Swashbucklers came from behind to defeat 2009 ASA B National Champs Keatings Fitness in dramatic fashion. A two out 2 run single by Mike Conigliaro in the bottom of the 5th inning put the Swash ahead 3-2 but Keatings bounced back with a 2 run homerun in the top of the 7th to put them up 4-3. Duane Weiler led off the bottom of the 7th with a single. Following a fielders choice, Lou Kass smashed a 2 run walkoff homerun, his 3rd hit of the game, to power the Swashbucklers to a 5-4 victory and the winners bracket final. Jerlyn Rutt threw a complete game 7 hitter, striking out 8. Swash carried that momentum into their next game and defeated the Virginia Aces 15-1 in 4 innings to cruise into the championship game. 16 different players had at least 1 hit and Weiler continued his dominance with a 3 hitter, allowing only an unearned run in the bottom of the 4th. The Bedford Rays came through the loser's bracket and had to beat the Swashbucklers twice on Sunday but the hot bats of the boys from NY could not be stopped. Tied 3-3 heading into the top of the 6th, a 2 run double by Steve Schwartz and a two out RBI single by Steve Mullady gave the Swash a 6-3 lead and they added 2 more in the top of the 7th to cap off their undefeated weekend with an 8-3 win. Jerlyn Rutt picked up his 3rd win of the weekend, giving up only 6 hits and striking out 9.

With 3 wins on the weekend, Jerlyn "Dirty" Rutt won tournament MVP. Duane Weiler won best pitcher, giving up only 1 unearned run in 2 complete game victories. Mike Bourbakis, Steve Mullady, Steve Schwartz and Mike Conigliaro each made the all-tournament team.
