Two teams playing one game a week is better than nothing for fastpitch softball in Erie.
Â
City Rec play has steadily declined, along with all softball, in the past 25 years. The league was reduced to four teams, then three, before it dissolved after the 2012 season. However, some of the guys will play ball after all on Tuesday evenings at 11th and Hess.
Â
"It's basically going to be exhibition games, and teams alternating players and still having some fun,'' said Bill Hillhouse, a world class pitcher from Erie who said he will be hanging it up at the age of 41 after this summer.
Â
"Some of the guys still wanted to play, so Erie Beer and Eddie McCormick will still sponsor us. And my brother Hughie decided to make a comeback for one last fling, so we'll probably pitch against each other a lot,'' Hillhouse said.
Â
Hillhouse said the third Ed McCormick Tournament is scheduled for the last week in July, featuring some of the best softball teams in the world.
Â
"It's the week before the ASA Nationals, and we should have some great teams in here again,'' Hillhouse said.
