WCWS TV coverage a record, tops Men's WCWS By Bill Plummer III
The 2015 Women's College World Series not only set an attendance record but it also was a success by people watching it on television. In fact, the 2015 WCWS was the most viewed Women's College World Series on record, averaging 1,196,000 viewers (15 games from May 28th-June 3rd). In addition, the three-game championship series between Florida and Michigan averaged 1,912,000 viewers, the most viewed WCWS Championship Finals ever.
In comparing the WCWS and the Men's College World Series, softball won hands-down. The Women's Championship Series had a three game average of 1,850,000 viewers while baseball viewing averaged 1,410,000 in the three-game series matching Vanderbilt and Virginia.
The 2015 Women's College World Series also had the four of the top 10 most-watched games in the event's history since 1990. The No. 2 most-watched game was the championship series finale between Michigan and Florida with 2,273,000 viewers. The No. 4 most-watched game was game 12 between LSU and Michigan with an average 1,950,000 viewers. The No. 6 most-watched game was the second game of championship series between Florida and Michigan with an average 1,865,000 viewers and the No.9 most-watched game was UCLA versus Auburn in game nine, averaging 1,612,000 viewers.
The 2015 WCWS bracket round (12 games) averaged 1,055,000 viewers, the second most-viewed WCWS bracket round. This was topped only by the 2010 WCWS bracket round of 1,114,000 viewers.
The 2015 WCWS follows ESPN's record-setting year of coverage with 44 games televised across ESPN, ESPN2 and ESPNU with viewership increased 29 percent compared to a similiar television slate in 2014.With the addition of the SEC network and expansion of ESPN3 coverage, ESPN covered more than 400 college softball games this season.
